ক্যালভিন চক্রের প্রথম স্থায়ী পদার্থ 3-কার্বনবিশিষ্ট ফসফোগ্লিসারিক এসিড বলে এই ধরনের উদ্ভিদকে বলে C3 উদ্ভিদ। ক্যালভিন তার এ আবিষ্কারের জন্য 1961 সালে নোবেল পুরস্কার পান। অধিকাংশ উদ্ভিদে এই প্রক্রিয়ায় শর্করা তৈরি হয়।
